Whether you’re a home baker or a professional pastry chef, one thing is certain: You need a good kitchen scale. Measuring ingredients by weight, rather than in “cups” or “tablespoons,” leads to much more accurate measurements — and, in turn, a better and more consistent final product. Not only that, but measuring on a scale eliminates the need to dirty up measuring cups and spoons, especially when you’re dealing with messy or sticky ingredients like honey or peanut butter.

Prior to my media career, I worked full-time in a bakery for four years, and I spent the majority of that time making large batches of bread from scratch. (Focaccia, brioche, ciabatta, sourdough, baguette — you name it; I’ve probably made it.) And, in doing so, I became a bit of a diva when it comes to kitchen scales. Luckily, this My Weigh digital food scale holds up to my high standards, and here’s why I think you’ll love it.

My Weigh KD-7000 Digital Food Scale, $47.94

First off, this scale is incredibly easy to use, with a user-friendly four-button control panel and an easy-to-read backlit display. You can power it either with three AA batteries (sold separately) or the included AC adapter, which plugs right into an outlet. It’s equipped with a removable stainless steel weighing platform and an acrylic faceplate protector, plus a removable plastic cover to protect the buttons and LCD display from damage. The scale itself isn’t dishwasher-safe, but you can remove the weighing platform and run it through the dishwasher for easy cleanup.

The My Weigh scale boasts a 15.4-pound weight capacity, which is essential when making large batches of bread, cookie dough and other baked goods. You can measure ingredients in grams, ounces, pounds and kilograms, so you’re not limited to imperial units when using this scale. It also has a two-minute auto-shutoff, so if you need to step away from the scale for a brief moment in the middle of weighing something, the measurements on the display will stay intact.

One of my favorite things about this scale is the “tare” function, which allows you to weigh ingredients in a bowl or container without having to subtract the weight of said bowl or container. (Numbers are not my strong suit, so this is a huge help for me.) Simply put your vessel of choice on the weighing platform, wait for the weight to register on the display, and press the “tare” button, which will reset the weight to zero. From there, all you have to do is add your ingredients into the vessel and the scale will tell you exactly how much they weigh — no math required.

My only minor gripe with this scale is that, even though it has non-slip feet on the bottom, it tends to slide around on the counter as you’re working with it. However, to circumvent this, I place my scale on top of a slightly damp washcloth, and it stays right in place. (Work smarter, not harder, right?)

Amazon reviewers also share my sentiments when it comes to how well this scale works. One reviewer was impressed with its easy-to-read display and the generous auto-shutoff timer, while another reviewer praised the “professional grade” of this scale. “If you’re going to bake, measuring your ingredients is the only way to go. This is perfect for that task.”

This scale is normally priced around $55, but right now you can grab it for $48, which shaves off a few bucks. So, if you’ve got loads of holiday baking coming up, do yourself (and your baked goods) a favor and invest in this high-quality scale.
