NYX Shine Loud is the best liquid lipstick I’ve ever tried — here’s why

Although I’m a makeup minimalist, I’ve always loved using lipstick as an accessory. The perfect red or pink can accent an outfit just like a great jacket or pair of earrings. So over the years, I’ve tried many different brands of creams, glosses and liquid lippies to find the shades I love most, and — even more elusive — formulas that actually stay on through meals, sipping from my precious water bottle and just living life. As an animal lover, I’m devoted to purchasing cruelty-free products, so NYX, the affordable, beauty-influencer-beloved, vegan brand has always been a favorite of mine (though it’s worth noting that while NYX doesn’t use animal testing for its products or ingredients, it is owned by L’Oreal, which is not a cruelty-free company). After trying and loving the brand’s Butter Gloss and Lip Lingerie matte liquid lipstick, I finally caved to all the Instagram ads I was getting for their dual-ended Shine Loud liquid lip — and, spoiler alert, it blew everything else I’d ever used out of the water.

NYX Shine Loud Liquid Lipstick, $8.53+

There’s lots to love about this product, but first and foremost, it really lasts longer than any other lipstick I’ve tried, even through serious tests, including meals and kissing. I was amazed that I could actually go about my day and still have 90% of my lipstick intact several hours and activities later. It claims to offer up to 16 hours of wear, and I believe it. I sometimes wake up with some of the color still on the next morning!

I started with the super bold cherry shade Rebel In Red (one of 12 colors currently available on Amazon for up to 29% off) and was so obsessed that I quickly ordered the perfect subtle pink Trophy Life (not available on Amazon, but you can get it for $12 at Ulta). Since it’s so bright, the red shows fading and chips a bit more, but it still fares better than other red lipsticks I’ve tried. Meanwhile, the more natural pink’s fading is hardly noticeable at all. As it wears, you may feel it piling a bit, but it’s not very visible.

The application is a two-step process. First, you swipe on the pigmented, slightly creamy base coat formulated with hydrating, protective oils including jojoba, macadamia seed and passionfruit seed. This end of the product has a doe-foot applicator (my favorite) and application is easy — though be warned it’s also easy to get on your teeth for the first few minutes it’s drying! You could totally rock this layer by itself for a look that more resembles a traditional, somewhat shiny liquid lip. But if you want a shinier look, let the first layer dry, swipe on the second end for a glossy look. I much prefer this magic concoction to other brands of liquid lipstick; I know some people swear by the truly liquid-y formulas of brands like The Lip Bar and Urban Decay, but I’m partial to this slightly creamy texture. Plus, while my other favorite liquid lipsticks (NYX’s Lip Lingerie and Fenty Beauty’s Icon) are matte, the shine makes this one particularly special.

I’m clearly not the only one obsessed with this stuff. In fact, I may be late to the party — it already has 4,600 five-star ratings on Amazon. These reviewers are equally as amazed by its staying power as I am; one even titled their review, “This will stay on forever!!” Another says, “I use this every day, [and I’ve] literally found my favorite go-to.”

For $12 or less, this lipstick will serve you better than expensive brands and make you feel fabulous — it certainly has for me. Just be warned, you may find yourself ordering more and more colors because you love it so much. I tried my third shade, the hot pink Lead Everything (of course even the names are cute) today, and sat here eating a burger as I wrote this. And you know what? I won’t be needing to touch up before my next video call.
