Films for fun and fright
Have some fun and get a little scared when the Olympia Film Society presents “All Freakin’ Night,” a horror movie marathon that starts Friday (Oct. 13) and goes, well, you read the title. It will feature five films including “Bride of Re-Animator,” “Eaten Alive,” and “The Mutilator.” Join in the trivia contest and don a cool costume to possibly win a prize. Doors open at 9 p.m. at the Capitol Theater, 206 Fifth Ave. SE, Olympia. The first film screens at 10 p.m. Tickets are $20 general admission, or $15 for OFS members. American West featured in Masterworks concert
Opening its 37th season, Masterworks Choral Ensemble will take the audience on a musical ride through the American West as it presents “Way Out West: Beloved American Ballads.” The concert also will feature a solo violin performance by Caddie Derby. The music begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Washington Center for Performing Arts, 512 Washington St. SE, Olympia. Old-time string band Molsky’s Mountain Drifters brings fiddle talent to Arbutus
It’s going to be two days of music and workshops when Molsky’s Mountain Drifters comes to Arbutus Folk School at Nova Middle School, 2020 22nd Ave. SE, Olympia. Bruce Molsky has been billed as one of America’s premier fiddling talents, but he also brings two next-generation traditional players, Allison de Groot and Stash Wyslouch. The concert also will feature the Bow Weevils, a traditional string band with musicians ages 11-15. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. Friday (Oct. 13), followed by a Saturday workshop. Audience collaboration big part of improv troupe
The Olympia Improv Collective kicks off its fall season with “The Midnight Zone” at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Olympia Family Theater, 612 Fourth Ave. E., Olympia. Each show of its shows is crafted in collaboration with the audience for a truly interactive experience. Admission is $5. The troupe will perform the second and fourth Fridays of October and November. Audience members are invited to bring significant or interesting objects to be used as the starting point for the show. Life and work of Edith Piaf highlighted in live show
“Piaf! The Show” is a musical celebration of the life and music of 1930s French chanteuse Edith Piaf. The show stars Anne Carrere and is inspired by the 2007 biographical film “La Vie En Rose.” The show, which has two 45-minute acts, begins at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Washington Center for Performing Arts, 512 Washington St. SE, Olympia. Mountainfilm brings outdoor film tour to Olympia
Telluride, Colorado-based Mountainfilm is dedicated to educating, inspiring and motivating audiences about the environment, cultures, issues and adventures. It’s annual Mountainfilm on Tour 2017 is coming to the Capitol Theater, 206 Fifth Ave. SE, Olympia, for a 7 p.m. Saturday screening. ‘Phantom of the Opera’ kicks off Silent Movie Series
To kick off its annual Silent Movie Series, The Washington Center for the Performing Arts is presenting “The Phantom of the Opera” at 2 p.m. Sunday. The 1925 film that defined the horror genre stars Lon Chaney Sr. Each film is presented with live musical accompaniment on the Andy Crow Wurlitzer Organ. It’s vaudeville and it’s spectacular
In the tradition of vaudeville shows from the early 20th century, BigShow City Performing Arts Organization presents the annual “Lord Franzannian Royal Olympian Spectacular Vaudeville Show” starting Friday (Oct. 13) and running weekends through Oct. 21. The fast-paced variety show tried to offer at little something for everyone. Proceeds benefit working performers and BigShow City to help burgeoning artists. Shows are 8 p.m. Fridays-Sundays through Oct. 21; there also will be a 2 p.m. show this Sunday. Tickets are $15-$25 at the door at the Midnight Sun Performance Space, 113 N Columbia St., Olympia.
