Out and About: Revisit ‘Napoleon Dynamite,’ treat the kids, check out comedy

‘Napoleon’ returns

The Olympia Film Society’s long-delayed “Napoleon Dynamite” screening with stars Jon Heder and Efren Ramirez — originally scheduled for April 2020 — is finally happening. Heder (who played nerd’s nerd Napoleon) and Ramirez (who played shy Pedro) will present the cartoonish cult classic at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, at the Capitol Theater, 206 Fifth Ave. SE, Olympia. After the screening, the “Dynamite” duo will answer questions about the 2004 comedy, a small-scale teen flick that’s success is sometimes seen as unlikely as its hero’s. Doors open at 7 p.m., and tickets are $50, $45 for OFS members.

Monster bash

Halloween is festive, not frightful, at The Hands On Children’s Museum’s Boo Bash, a 10-day-long costume party with such treats as pumpkin decorating, demonstrations by Dr. Science, a straw bale maze and a chance to meet Madagascar hissing cockroaches. There’ll be costume parades and a photo booth, too. The bash is happening daily Oct. 22-31 at the museum, 414 Jefferson St. NE, Olympia. It’s free with museum admission, and online reservations are needed.

Miller time

Olympia comedian Sam Miller, longtime host of Vomity Comedy, is launching a new weekly standup show in downtown Olympia. What he redundantly calls “The Sam Miller Comedy Show Hosted by Sam Miller” kicks off Wednesday, Oct. 27, with headliner Kermet Apio of Seattle, who won the Seattle International Comedy Competition in 1991. Apio, who grew up in Hawaii, specializes in autobiographical comedy, including jokes about his name (“Kermet is a Celtic word meaning ‘great warrior.’ It’s also an American word meaning ‘frog.’ “) and the pizza named for his home state (“You know what we Hawaiians are famous for? Canadian bacon. That’s right. I grew up near the Canadian bacon trees of Hawaii.”) . “TSMCSHBSM” happens at 9 p.m. Wednesdays at the Wayside Café, 500 Capitol Way S., Olympia. Tickets are $15.

If you’re going to the Wayside, freelance writer Molly Gilmore recommends the cauliflower wings. She talks about what’s happening in Olympia and beyond with 95.3 KGY-FM’s Michael Stein from 3 to 4 p.m. Fridays.
