‘Gag me with a spoon’

If you feel nostalgic rather than disgusted, Olympia Film Society has something for you: The “Valley Girl” herself, actress and photographer Deborah Foreman, will be in Olympia this weekend. On Saturday, July 30, Foreman will attend a screening of the gnarly 1983 comedy co-starring Nicolas Cage. (And if you don’t feel nostalgic, think of the 39-year-old flick as an intriguing artifact, sort of like cave paintings.) The screening begins at 7 p.m. at the Capitol Theater, 206 Fifth Ave. SE, Olympia, with doors opening at 6. Tickets are $20-$25. Foreman, who’s starred in numerous horror flicks over the years, also will be on hand for a screening of 1986’s murder-filled “April Fool’s Day,” happening at 7 p.m. Friday, July 29. (Doors open at 6.) Tickets are $10-$15. Masks are encouraged at the Capitol Theater.

Park performances

Both Olympia and Lacey are serving up abundant outdoor entertainment this summer. The Olympia Downtown Alliance’s annual Music in the Park wraps up Sunday, July 31, with a concert by bassist and composer E Pruitt, who’ll play from 1 to 2 p.m. in Sylvester Park, 615 Washington St. SE, Olympia. Pruitt, whose music mixes jazz, funk, rhythm and blues and soul, has toured internationally and won multiple awards. His band was named Best Band in the 2018 Seattle Sound Music awards. Lacey in Tune, meanwhile, is offering up some country tunes on Friday, July 29, with music by the Nate Botsford Band at 7 p.m. in Huntamer Park, 618 Woodland Square Loop SE, followed by a screening of “Sing 2,” a 2021 animated musical with the voices of Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon and Scarlett Johansson.

They’re crafty

The Elysian Fields craft market, happenings Saturday, July 30, is not your grandma’s craft fair — or it probably isn’t, anyway. (The Olympian doesn’t know your grandma.) Many of the artisans selling at the marketplace, named for the paradise of Greek myth, are burlesque artists, too, and the market features not only art, photos, jewelry and candles but also hats, pasties, underwear and silk fans. Check out the selection, including crocheted pieces by Episcene and photos by Vanessa the Witch, from 1 to 7 p.m. at Tōdai Yoga, a Black-owned yoga studio inside Burial Grounds at 601 Capitol Way S., Olympia.

Freelance writer Molly Gilmore talks about what’s happening in Olympia and beyond with 95.3 KGY-FM’s Michael Stein from 3 to 4 p.m. Fridays.
