Postcards from the edge

No, we’re not talking about 1990 dark comedy penned by Carrie Fisher and starring Meryl Streep. The annual Fine Art Postcard Exhibition returns to the Leonor R. Fuller Gallery at South Puget Sound Community College for its 12th year with the theme “From the Edge.” The opening reception will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6 at the gallery inside the Minnaert Center for the Arts on SPSCC’s Olympia campus. “Each year, the postcard theme is a sort of ‘ad-lib’ prompt to inspire our creative community,” said Sean Barnes, gallery director and coordinator, in a news release. “The theme is selected from a list of suggestions solicited from the community in the first week of the Postcard Exhibition and at the opening reception, then the gallery committee and I vote to select one.” This year’s theme was selected from 33 community suggestions. If you’ve got a good idea for next year’s theme, get your ideas into the suggestion box at this year’s show. The exhibition features postcard-sized original artworks created by artists of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds, including SPSCC students, staff, and faculty, that will be sold through a silent auction. All proceeds will support gallery programming. More information is available on the college’s Leonor R. Fuller Gallery page.

A folk tale about the long dark

This weekend is your last opportunity to take in Olympia Family Theater’s “Nyx and the Long Night,” a winter folk myth and co-production with String & Shadow Puppet Theater. Co-created by Emily McHugh, Donald Palardy and Lily Raabe, and directed by Luz Gaxiola, the play tells the tale of two sisters: Sol, a child of Day, and Luna, a child of Night, who caused a plunge into endless winter one day when they dropped the Sun. Now it’s up to Nyx, who is part girl, part tree, to bring the light back. The play is recommended for those ages 5 and older. All shows for this weekend are sold out online, but tickets will be available in person at the box office 1 hour prior to each performance. Performances begin at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 6-7, and 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 7-8, at the theater, 612 Fourth Ave. E., Olympia.

Last chances for a twirl on the ice

The holidays may be over, but the city of Olympia’s love affair with wintry fun isn’t. Oly on Ice, the city’s seasonal ice skating rink, continues through Jan. 16. Admission is $9 on Mondays and Tuesdays, $12 on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and $15 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays; however, those 3 and younger skate for $5 anytime. Daytime and evening hours vary. Visit olyonice.com for more information on hours, purchasing tickets and other details. The ice rink is set up at Isthmus Park at 529 Fourth Ave. W. in downtown Olympia.
