Strap on your skates at Oly on Ice, paint and sing at the Eagles Club or see the Bard in Centralia

Nice ice

Most Olympia residents prefer to be out of town (or snug at home) when Olympia is icy — unless, that is, the ice is Oly on Ice, the city’s pop-up skating rink. The rink, in Isthmus Park at 529 Fourth Ave. W., opens Friday, Nov. 22 for a two-month stint. “We’re thrilled to bring Oly on Ice back to Olympia for another magical season,” Anna Uyeda of Olympia’s Parks, Arts & Recreation Department said in a news release. “This rink has become a beloved winter tradition, and we’re excited to welcome the community to gather, skate and make lasting memories.” The rink is open through Jan. 20, and tickets (which include 75 minutes on the ice and skate rental) are $10-$16, with toddlers (3 and younger) admitted for $5.

Crafty karaoke

Whether or not you’re brave enough to sing in public, you can get creative a workout Friday, Nov. 22, at Paint by Number Karaoke. Hosted by local artist Celery Jones, the event starts at 7 p.m. at the Olympia Eagles Club, 805 Fourth Ave. E., and is open to all ages until 9 p.m. (Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.) A $10-$15 donation is suggested, and you must RSVP on Facebook.

A second chance for Shakespeare fans

If you love all things Shakespearean yet missed “The Book of Will” at South Puget Sound Community College, you can catch the well-regarded production through Sunday, Nov. 23, at Centralia College. The two colleges co-produced the Lauren Gunderson play about a pair of actors who helped to preserve the bard’s plays. Olympia’s Brian Tyrrell directs a cast that includes such notable locals as Kathy Dorgan, Drew and Paige Doyle, Kim and Russ Holm, Andy Gordon and Ed Thorpe. Performances are at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22 and 23, and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 23 and 24, at Centralia College’s Corbet Theatre, Washington Hall, 600 Centralia College Blvd., Centralia. Tickets are $10-$12.

Freelance writer Molly Gilmore talks with DJ Kevin the Brit about what’s happening around town on KGY-FM’s “Oly in a Can,” airing at 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Fridays.
