Christmas comedy and classical music highlight this weekend’s entertainment options
‘Crazy Little Christmas’
Olympia Little Theatre, which illuminated the funny side of the winter holidays with 2022’s “One Christmas Eve at Evergreen Mall,” is at it again. The company’s “Have Yourself a Crazy Little Christmas” centers on Molly (Elizette Brown), whose plans to treat her family to a perfect Christmas Eve are thwarted by mishaps, mischief and mashed potatoes. Performances are at 7:25 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-7, plus Dec. 13-14 and 19-21 and 1:55 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, plus Dec. 15 and 22 at the theater, 1925 Miller Ave. NE, Olympia. Tickets are $10-$16.
Chamber and choral music
The acclaimed Brentano String Quartet, in residence at the Yale School of Music, will play the music of Joseph Haydn in Emerald City Music’s next concert, happening Friday, Dec. 6, in Seattle and Saturday, Dec. 7, in Olympia. Typically, the chamber series presents the same program in both cities, but this time around, the musicians will split Haydn’s Op. 33 Quartets between the two, so only those who attend both concerts will get to hear all six quartets. The Olympia concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Capital High School Performing Arts Center, 707 Conger Ave. NW, Olympia. Tickets are $39-$49, $10 for students.
Also making music Saturday, Dec. 7, is Masterworks Choral Ensemble. The chorus’s holiday concert, “It Could Be Beautiful,” celebrates peace, light and love with a program featuring Elaine Hagenberg’s “Illuminare” for choir and chamber orchestra. The music begins at 7:30 p.m. at The Washington Center for the Performing Arts, 512 Washington St. S.E., Olympia. Tickets are $24; $20 for students 15 and older, seniors and military; $12 for youth 14 and younger.
‘God’ is back
Though Washington is the most unchurched state in the nation, it seems that South Sound just can’t get enough of God — at least when “God Is a Scottish Drag Queen.” The series of shows starring Canadian comedian Mike Delamont has been drawing bigger audiences each time it stops at The Washington Center for the Performing Arts, said center executive director Jill Barnes. On Friday, Dec. 6, the center will host Delamont’s “God Is a Scottish Drag Queen Christmas Special”. Sample joke: “A heart that grows three sizes — that’s heart disease.” The merriment — for ages 18 and older only — begins at 7:30 p.m. at the center. Tickets are $29-$58.
Freelance writer Molly Gilmore keeps missing Delamont’s Olympia shows; this time around, she’ll be at the Seattle Men’s Chorus’ holiday concert, which she attends with the reverence and regularity some folks reserve for “The Nutcracker.” She talks with DJ Kevin the Brit about what’s happening around town on KGY-FM’s “Oly in a Can,” airing at 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Fridays.
