Long weekend offers festival at Longhouse, rock musical that kills it, sci-fi flavored burlesque

Olympia’s Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Festival happens Saturday, May 24. The free event, organized by the Asian Pacific Islander Coalition of South Puget Sound, will feature music and dance performances, martial arts demonstrations and free family activities along with food vendors and information on community organizations. The festival happens from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the House of Welcome (Longhouse) at The Evergreen State College, 2800 Dogtooth Lane NW, Olympia. Admission is free and open to all.

Lizzie Borden rocks

Lizzie Borden — notoriously accused but not convicted of murdering her father and stepmother with an ax in 1892 — remains renowned in part as the subject of a jump-rope rhyme that begins “Lizzie Borden took an ax and gave her mother 40 whacks.” That rhyme begins and ends the 2009 musical “Lizzie, opening Friday, May 23, at South Puget Sound Community College, a rock retelling of the legendary tale. “The show is a hybrid raucous rock concert and Victorian crime story,” said Lauren Love, the college’s drama professor. The show, starring Jesse Morrow, is recommended for ages 18 and older. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 23-24, plus May 30-31 and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 25, plus June 1 at the Minnaert Center for the Arts, 2011 Mottman Road SW, Olympia. Admission is by a $15 suggested donation, with students, staff and faculty admitted free.

‘Dr. Who’-inspired burlesque

Fans of the nerdy British sci-fi show are in for a surprise Saturday, May 24, when burlesque artist Latina Kash Turner D’Ho presents “Spoilers: A Timey Wimey Cabaret Experience.” Turner D’Ho will host as Thirteenth. It’s billed as an immersive and interactive journey through time and space featuring burlesque artists from Seattle to Portland. Suited for ages 18 and older, the show is at 7:30 p.m. at the Minnaert Center for the Arts, 2011 Mottman Road SW, Olympia. Tickets are $41.
