Catch the Duck ‘Dash’, the Souper Soiree or OFT’s spelling bee for a bit of fun
Duck Dash
Time was that the Lacey Rotary’s Duck Dash featured rubber ducks racing down the Deschutes River, but though the spectacle on the water is no more, the fundraiser and the free family-friendly fun are still afloat. The dash, happening Saturday, June 7, features entertainment, activities for kids, food, a beer garden and a car show as well as the opportunity to buy tickets for the raffle, which raises money for the club’s local, national and international projects. The event happens from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Thurston County Fairgrounds, 3054 Carpenter Road SE, Lacey.
Souper celebration
Three Magnets Brewing and Olympia soup guy Chris Hyde — whose mission to feed locals has expanded from giving soup to neighbors to fighting food insecurity — have cooked up a community celebration. The Souper Soirée, happening Saturday, June 7, will feature music by The Hinges and the release of Souper Sunday’s Hop Broth IPA beer along with guest speakers and food trucks. The focus, though, is on strengthening and expanding the community that has grown up around Souper Sunday and Hyde’s Food Source Foundation. It’s all happening from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday behind the old Carnegie Library, 620 Franklin St. SE, Olympia. Admission to the event is free, but attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable donations for the Thurston County Food Bank.
Last weekend for ‘Bee’
Olympia Family Theater’s “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” a Tony-winning musical comedy that dives into the lives of the tween spellers and the quirky adults running the spelling bee, is wrapping up its run — and the theater’s season. Crushes are revealed and Jesus is called upon in the 2005 play, which is recommended for ages 13 and older. There’s audience participation, too, though only those who volunteer will find themselves part of the bee. Performances are at 7 p.m. Friday, June 6; 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, June 7; and 2 p.m. Sunday, June 8, at the theater, 612 Fourth Ave. E, Olympia. Tickets are $25, although there are 10 pay-what-you-can tickets available at the theater an hour before each performance.
Freelance writer Molly Gilmore talks with DJ Kevin the Brit about what’s happening around town on KGY-FM’s “Oly in a Can,” airing at 2 p.m. Fridays.
