Outdoor entertainment wraps up this weekend, plus Grand Oly Opry helps YWCA

Grand Oly Opry benefits YWCA

The Grand Oly Opry, a night of rockin’ bluegrass and burlesque, is happening Saturday, Sept. 6. The Oly Mountain Boys, who’ve played the event since 2008, are headlining the music lineup, which also includes Sugar & the Spitfires, The Lady Drinks Whiskey and Corduroy Fox. Also on tap for the event, happening at the Eagles Ballroom, 805 Fourth Ave. E., Olympia: burlesque by Riveting Rosey and Momo La Vein and dance by the Honey Nut CheeriHos. There’ll be free cupcakes and a raffle, too. Hosted by the Olympia Ladies Drinking Club, the Opry is a community fundraiser; this year, the show (open only to ages 21 and older) benefits the YWCA of Olympia, which in August suspended operations due to lack of funding. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with entertainment beginning at 6. A $15 donation is suggested, with no one turned away for lack of funds.

Catch one more outdoor show or film

As days get shorter and nights get cooler, the season for al fresco plays and movies is drawing to a close. Bring chairs, blankets, picnics and bug repellent, and catch these while you can:

String and Shadow Puppet Theater’s “Night at the Grand Opera” — about the human and vermin denizens of a Gilded Age opera house — wraps up its run with performances at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, Sept. 4-7, as well as 4 p.m. Sunday in Decatur Woods Park, 1015 Decatur St. SW, Olympia. A $20 donation is suggested for admission, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

“Jumanji,” in which Robin Williams plays a man stuck in a magical board game, is the final movie in the Port of Olympia’s Movies at the Marina series. The 1995 fantasy screens at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at Swantown Marina, 1022 Marine Drive NE, Olympia. The event is free.

Second helping of Hump Fest

The Hump Fest, the amateur porn festival created by Seattle advice columnist Dan Savage, is screening Saturday, Sept. 6, in Olympia. The festival is known for showing an array of diverse, often funny and occasionally disturbing short films. For those keeping track, yes, Olympia already had a Hump screening in 2025. This isn’t a repeat, though; it’s a second collection of films submitted by adventurous sorts from around the world. (Past festivals have included locals.) The screening, hosted by Olympia’s Hattie Hotpants, is open to ages 18 and older. It’s at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Capitol Theater, 206 Fifth Ave. SE, Olympia. Doors open at 7, and lines around the block are to be expected. Tickets are $20.

Freelance writer Molly Gilmore talks with DJ Kevin the Brit (who blushes at the thought of Hump Fest) about what’s happening around town on KGY-FM’s “Oly in a Can,” airing at 2 p.m. Fridays.
