1981 Film Ranked No. 1 'Drama Movie of the '80s' Won 3 Academy Awards
The heartwarming 1981 film On Golden Pond, starring the late Henry Fonda, the late Katharine Hepburn, and actor and activist Jane Fonda, left an indelible mark on movie history for many reasons, not the least of which were its compelling storytelling, legendary dramatic performances, and a slew of nods and awards.
Ranked the No. 1 "Drama Movie of the 1980s," On Golden Pond pairs two renowned actors, who were both in their 70s at the time of filming-pretty uncommon in an industry that historically celebrated and still celebrates youth. Henry Fonda was 76, and Hepburn was 74 when they filmed the movie. Together they play the unforgettable, older married couple the world needed.

Henry Fonda plays Norman Thayer, the cranky "old poop," as his on-screen wife Ethel Thayer, played by Hepburn, lovingly calls him. The older couple is spending their 48th summer together at their family lake house in Maine when their estranged daughter Chelsea Thayer (played by Jane Fonda, Henry's real-life daughter) pops in and talks her parents into caring for her new boyfriend's 13-year old son Billy (played by Doug McKeon). A surprising relationship evolves, lots of moving, tear-jerking, and anxiety-inducing moments unfurl, and ultimately there is some much-needed family healing.
Jane Fonda and her father Henry Fonda famously struggled with a strained, emotionally distant relationship in real life, a fact that only added to their performances.
The actress has talked publicly about her difficult relationship with her father and says she was able to get some closure with her dad before his death. She tells People, "Before he died I was able to tell him that I loved him and that I forgave him for, you know, whatever didn't happen. And I hope that he would forgive me for not being a better daughter. I got to say that to him."
The actors and the film grabbed several nominations and wins at the Golden Globe and BAFTAs, and scooped up three Academy Awards in 1982 for the following:
- Henry Fonda - Best Actor in a Leading Role
- Katharine Hepburn - Best Actress in a Leading Role
- Ernest Thompson - Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay)
The win for his Norman Thayer role made Henry Fonda the oldest actor to win a Best Actor Oscar at the time (actor Anthony Hopkins has stolen this record). It was Fonda's final role before he died on August 12, 1982.
On Golden Pond was the second-highest-grossing film in 1981, earning over $119 million in box office revenue.
On Golden Pond will always be remembered for its rich portrayal of aging, marriage, family strife, and forgiveness. You'll also learn a little bit about loons and the definition of "suck face." Have your hanky available because there are some real tear-jerking scenes.
