This Is Why '80s Supermodel Paulina Porizkova Rejects One Popular Compliment
Legendary supermodel Paulina Porizkova is sick of hearing that she's "still beautiful" at 61 years old, and she made a video on April 16 to explain why compliments like that are so "offensive" to her.
"The word 'still' implies in the sentence exactly what it says: Still, which means unmoving, remaining the same, unchanged," she said in the clip, which shows the makeup-free beauty getting ready for bed while wearing pink lingerie and a floral robe.
The model pointed out that when people are young, change is celebrated, but remaining the same becomes the goal when women get older. "Why is that an accomplishment that we celebrate in older women?" she said. "At some point in a woman's life, generally after she is deemed done with childbearing, women should no longer learn anything new."
"If we still want a seat at the table in society, well, then we have to focus on being still," she concluded. "Still good-looking. Still attractive. Still beautiful. Still."
Porizkova's comments resonated with many of her fans. "Weird how no one comments to women 'still so smart!' or 'still so witty!' or 'still so creative!' or 'still so hardworking!' or 'still so kind!'… right?" wrote one commenter, while another added, "So right. I effing loathe when people say it." A third said, "Yes! I resent that word. It's such an insult."
Porizkova rose to fame internationally in the 1980s after being discovered as a teenager in Europe and quickly moving into high-profile fashion work in Paris and New York. Her big break came when she appeared on the cover of the 1984 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, becoming one of the youngest models ever to do it.
That attention led Porizkova to a long-running contract with Estée Lauder and dozens of covers on fashion magazines. Today, she's a model, actress, influencer and author, releasing a book calledNo Filter: The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful in 2022.
