2022 Heartbreak Anthem Became the Best Stevie Nicks Song She Never Sang

Hey, Fleetwood Mac fans, have you heard of Lissie yet? A 43-year-old singer-songwriter hailing from the Midwest, the rising star is hitting an emotional chord and filling a void that's lingered since the legendary band stepped away from the spotlight.

With her raspy tone and indie-folk persona, Lissie is frequently compared to the band's lead singer Stevie Nicks. Though she says the parallel is completely unintentional, she's still managed to capitalize on the similarity while creating a path that's all her own.

"It's funny because I've always loved classic rock," she says in an interview with Boston University. "Growing up I've always liked Fleetwood Mac, and Stevie Nicks is amazing. It's a total honor and a compliment to be compared to Stevie Nicks."

Releasing a piano-driven rendition of "Dreams" on her 2019 album, When I'm Alone: The Piano Retrospective, Lissie also released a raw, acoustic version of "Go Your Own Way" (originally recorded for a tea commercial) on her 2021 EP, Covered Up With Flowers. That one has since racked up nearly 40 million streams on Spotify.

"It's been an interesting thing that kept pulling me back without intentionally trying to align myself with this Fleetwood Mac comparison," she says. "But they're such an amazing band. I'll take it, I love it!"

Last year, Lissie released an ethereal take on "Everywhere" as part of her EPThank You to the Flowers, but it's actually one of her original hits that is earning the moniker "best Stevie Nicks song not sung by Stevie Nicks."

With "Night Moves," an Americana-tinged single off her 2022 album, Carving Canyons, the Midwest folk-rocker delivers her signature sonic comfort with a cosmic heartbreak anthem that sounds right out of the Nicks arsenal.

"Lissie's vocals are scarily close to Nicks'," American Songwritershares. "If you didn't know better, you could hear her music and be convinced it's a new Nicks offering. Take ‘Night Moves' for example. This song could easily be a Nicks hit, both in sound and lyricism. If I could claim anyone as being the heir to the rock legend's vocal legacy, it would be Lissie."

Adding to her Fleetwood Mac covers and original tracks are further tributes to popular hits. From The Pretenders' "I'll Stand by You" and Kid Cudi's "Pursuit of Happiness," to Simon & Garfunkel's "America" and Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters," Lissie has a long history of stripping down hits and making them her own.

"I really love tackling songs in different genres because it's kind of how you can tell a song's really good: You take everything away and it's still really solid."

And we love her so much for it.
