Goldie Hawn Reveals Why She Won't Marry Kurt Russell, Who She's Been Dating Since 1983

Goldie Hawn recently spoke with Entertainment Tonight about her long-term relationship, which has lasted for four decades. The legendary actress has been dating her partner, Kurt Russell, since 1983. He is now 75 and she is 80.

"We thought that by getting married that was actually going to take something from both of us that we didn't want," Hawn said when speaking to the outlet on May 5. "We want to choose each other every day."

The star continued, "I don't like ownership, you know? And I must say that I think Kurt feels the same way. I thought if I was a bird, and then someone put me in a cage, then they leave the door open, I'll never fly out. If they close the door on me, I'd probably get rid of all my feathers and become a bird with no feathers. I think that's one of the areas where we all have to feel free to be who we are, and think the way we do, and for those of us who want to have a happy life, I think you want to be happy with yourself."

When speaking about her relationship with Russell, she added, "He's kind, he's funny, he's romantic, he's a wonderful person. We don't always agree on stuff, which is fine. We're both very spontaneous. [Our relationship] fed on a lot of goodness, a lot of wonderful life together."

Hawn also spoke about their decision not to get married at a film panel in 2016. "If you like your independence, there's something psychological about not being married because it gives you the freedom to make decisions one way or the other," she explained. "So for me, I chose to stay, and Kurt chose to stay."

Russell has been open about their decision as well. In 2020, he said, "For people like us, the marriage certificate wasn't going to create anything that otherwise we wouldn't have. I don't know. 40 years isn't enough to finally say, ‘Well I guess…'"

Hawn and Russell have a blended family with four children.
