Path Of Exile 2: Return Of The Ancients Launches May 29 With New Ascendancies And A Rebuilt Atlas
Grinding Gear Games has finally pinned the date. Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients goes live May 29, 2026, with the 0.5.0 update that the studio has been quietly stacking with new endgame storylines, two debut Ascendancy classes, and an Atlas Tree rebuilt from the ground up. Following the May 7 content reveal that we covered when GGG first teased the expansion, the studio dropped its full press release this week with the launch confirmed and the feature list locked in.
What's New in Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients
This is the largest content drop the Early Access version of Path of Exile 2 on Steam has received since the December 2025 update, "The Last of the Druids". Return of the Ancients introduces over 50 hours of new endgame content, five new endgame storylines, and 15 new bosses, including four towering Pinnacle fights for players hunting the next mechanical wall to break.
The expansion also kicks off a fresh challenge system, a new wave of powerful unique items, and expanded crafting systems built around long-term character investment. If you have been waiting for a reason to roll a new build, this is it.
Two New Ascendancy Classes: Martial Artist and Spirit Walker
The headline additions are two brand-new Ascendancy classes. The Martial Artist leans into close-quarters discipline and unarmed-style mechanics, while the Spirit Walker opens up a more ethereal, summoning-adjacent path that pairs cleanly with the Hexerei-flavored builds players have been theorycrafting since 0.4.0.
Both classes slot into the redesigned Atlas Tree, which Grinding Gear is calling a complete reimagining rather than a tune-up. Expect new node placements, fresh keystones, and cleaner pathing for the build planners who live in PoE's spreadsheets.
Build Planner, Replayability, and Quality-of-Life Upgrades
One of the biggest player-facing additions is a new Build Planner, a long-requested tool that should ease the friction of skill-tree experimentation and gear targeting. Grinding Gear has paired it with improved campaign replayability and a list of quality-of-life features designed to support every step of a character's journey, from leveling pacing through endgame mapping.
For lapsed exiles, this is the patch that earns a return trip. The studio has telegraphed Return of the Ancients as the foundation it wants to carry into the eventual 1.0 release.
Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients Release Date and Platforms
Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients launches May 29, 2026 on PC and consoles. Path of Exile 2 remains in paid Early Access on Steam, the PlayStation Store, and the Xbox ecosystem, with the 0.5.0 update rolling out to all platforms simultaneously.
Grinding Gear's livestream cadence has been telegraphing this moment since The Last of the Druids livestream went live in December. May 29 is when the talk stops and the league grind starts. Sharpen your build, queue your Twitch overlays, and clear your weekend.
