69 Years Ago, Elvis Presley Entered His Most Iconic Film Era and Delivered a Career-Defining Movie Moment

Sixty-nine years ago, Elvis Presley stepped into one of his most defining on-screen moments, starring in a film that would cement his status as a Hollywood icon.

Jailhouse Rock was a critical moment in Presley's film career. Principal production began on May 13, 1957, and the first segment filmed was the "Jailhouse Rock" number, as reported by Elvis Australia.

The website reported that before filming began, Presley began work on its soundtrack, heading to the studio on April 30, 1957. Subsequently, he began costume fittings, makeup tests, and dance rehearsals on May 6.

Jailhouse Rock was the entertainer's third film. His first two were Love Me Tender in 1956 and Loving You in 1957.

The film's storyline may have been unrealistic, but Presley's fans didn't care. He played Vince, a construction worker sentenced to jail after accidentally killing a man in a bar fight, becoming a singing sensation after his release.

Jailhouse Rock cemented itself into pop culture history when Vince danced among other prisoners to the film's namesake song. The moment has been called, per the official Graceland website, the first "music video."

The website explains, "Choreographer Alex Romero had originally planned for the scene to be full of smooth, Fred Astaire-type dancing, but of course, Elvis is Elvis, not Fred Astaire. He asked Elvis to perform a few songs as if he were performing on stage at a concert. After watching Elvis' natural dance moves, he redesigned the entire number."

Presley suffered a serious injury while filming the segment, according to the official Graceland website. He managed to get a tooth cap lodged in his lung.

The entertainer was hospitalized so the issue could be surgically treated. The real-life health scare reportedly influenced the film's ending, with Presley's character suffering a throat injury as well.

The film also marked a major moment in Elvis Presley's personal life, as it was during the production of Jailhouse Rock that his parents, Gladys and Vernon Presley, and grandmotherMinnie Mae Presley, moved into Graceland. The Memphis home would soon become forever linked to the Presley family legacy.

Jailhouse Rock would go on to gross almost $4M in the United States alone.
