1985 Romantic Drama, Featuring a No. 1 Hit Ballad, Ranked Among 'Best Movie Soundtracks' of All Time
Matthew Modineand Linda Fiorentino starred in a coming-of-age romantic sports drama that became a movie staple thanks to its soundtrack full of rock hits. The film also led to the first major motion picture appearance of Madonna with a hit ballad.
Vision Quest gained cult classic status with a storyline based on Terry Davis's 1979 novel of the same name. Directed by Harold Becker, the film starred Modine as 18-year-old Louden Swan, who decides to embark on a "vision quest". Louden decides to drop several weight classes in wrestling to fight the area's toughest wrestler, but does so against the wishes of his coach and teammates. It leads to several health issues that disrupt his life.
Meanwhile, Fiorentino stars as aspiring artist Carla from Trenton, New Jersey. She meets Louden while boarding at his home, with him beginning to fall in love with her. His wrestling goals begin to put a bigger strain on his health and relationship.
Vision Quest did moderately well at the box office, earning $13 million with mixed or average reviews from critics. What caught attention was the film's soundtrack, that's been included in Rolling Stone's list of the Best Movie Soundtracks of All Time, landing at No. 69. The soundtrack also included Madonna's pop ballad classic "Crazy For You."
"Thanks to the runaway success of a certain song performed in the film by a still-on-the-rise superstar named Madonna. The rest captures mid-Eighties AOR rock radio at its most inspirational and soaring," said Rolling Stone.
Vision Quest's soundtrack included rock hits like "Only the Young" by Journey, "Hungry for Heaven" by Die, "Hot Blooded" by Foreigner, John Waite's "Change," and Red Rider's "Lunatic Fringe." The tracks were rock classics that embodied the sentiment of the '80s and the movie's overall theme.

Madonna's pop ballad topped the charts
When Vision Quest was released, Madonna was still an up-and-coming artist. She contributed "Crazy For You" and "Gambler" for the film, with her performing the ballad as a side character in the film. The track is heard when both Modine and Fiorentino's characters dance for the first time, with its lyrics about sexual attraction and desire.
The track had its hiccups when writers John Bettis and Jon Lind weren't initially impressed by Madonna's recordings. They believed Madonna wasn't fit for the ballad and feared the song would be dropped from the soundtrack until the involvement of Rob Mounsey. "Crazy For You" ended up becoming a success as a single and on the movie soundtrack.
It landed at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and was considered a "sonic shift" in Madonna's career. After multiple pop hits, "Crazy For You" proved Madonna could take on multiple vocal ranges and genres. It earned her first Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
