1971 Soulful Classic, Named No. 1 Hit Song for Three Weeks, Ranked Among ‘Best Rock Songs' of All Time
All sub-genres of rock music dominated the mainstream in the late 20th century. Out of the thousands of songs produced under the rock umbrella, a select few standouts have truly stood the test of time.
In April, Ultimate Classic Rock ranked the 100 best rock songs of all time, compiling a list of the greatest works across every rock sub-genre. Ranked among hits such as Chuck Berry's 1958 anthem "Johnny B. Goode" at No. 74 and Iron Maiden's 1982 classic "Run to the Hills" at No. 72, Sly & the Family Stone secured the No. 73 spot with their song "Family Affair."
Released on November 6, 1971, as the lead single from their fifth studio album, There's a Riot Goin' On, "Family Affair" was a massive success. Upon its release, the track climbed up the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at No. 1 on December 4 and holding the position for three consecutive weeks. The song also dominated the Billboard R&B Singles chart, holding the No. 1 spot for five consecutive weeks, attesting to its ability to reach diverse audiences.
Aside from its unparalleled chart triumph, the song achieved significant commercial milestones. By January 1972, "Family Affair" was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for selling over 500,000 physical units.
Produced and written entirely by frontman Sly Stone, "Family Affair" was highly distinct for its moody nature-a stark departure from the high-energy, optimistic style that defined the band's sound in the late '60s. Instead of utilizing a live studio drummer, Stone famously programmed an early electronic drum machine to create a pulsing, heartbeat-like rhythm. This element grounded the track and marked one of the first times a No. 1 single featured the innovative technology.
