1999 Rock-Infused Country Anthem Became a Feel-Good Classic, Despite Never Hitting No. 1

One of Shania Twain's biggest hits may not have reached the top of the music charts, but it remains a go-to anthem of female empowerment.

The 1999 single "Man! I Feel Like a Woman" is a high-energy, rock-infused country pop classic that helped define Twain's career and solidify her status as one of the most successful female country singers of all time - but surprisingly, it never had its moment to shine at the top of the music charts.

"Man! I Feel Like a Woman" first came out as part of Twain's third studio album, Come On Over in 1997, before it was later released as a single in 1999. It peaked at No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1999, spending a total of 28 weeks in various spots on the chart.

On the Hot Country Songs chart, Twain has had seven songs hit No. 1, but "Man! I Feel Like a Woman" isn't one of them, instead peaking at No. 4. Her No. 1 country singles include "Honey, I'm Home"; "You're Still the One"; "Love Gets Me Every Time"; "Any Man of Mine"; "(If You're Not In It For Love) I'm Outta Here!"; "You Win My Love"; and "No One Needs to Know."

But even though "Man! I Feel Like a Woman" didn't reach the No. 1 spot, it's still regarded as one of the defining songs from Twain's career. In fact, it earned her a Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance at the 2000 ceremony.

The song also has an iconic accompanying music video - famously starring Twain in a gender-bending black and white ensemble and a veil over her face - which has racked up over 530 million views on YouTube.

In 2023, "Man! I Feel Like a Woman" was certified 3x Platinum by the RIAA, signifying 3 million copies sold.
