1984 One-Hit Wonder From a Soap Opera Star Became One of the Greatest Love Songs of All Time
If you're going to tease legions of daytime TV fans as part of a band called Blackie and the Riff Raff, you better be able to back it up. Fortunately for Jack Wagner, he could. And did.
The General Hospital soap star still has fans bowled from his 1984 megahit, "All I Need." In fact, Grunge magazine just named the actor-turned-singer-turned-actor's soft-rock ballad one of the best one-hit wonder love songs from the '80s, writing, "Wagner embraced an adult contemporary sound, singing treacly and declarative love songs, essentially musical equivalents of sappy soap opera plots. And he was successful at it too."
Released in October 1984 while Wagner was still actively starring as Frisco Jones on GH, the song spent 22 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking in January1985 at No. 2, where it stayed for two consecutive weeks. The track was Wagner's only Top 40 entry, but it was a good one.
Produced by Quincy Jones protegé Glen Ballard and Clif Magness, who also co-wrote the track alongside David Pack, the tune captured the refined, emotive sound signature of adult contemporary and soft rock ballads of the time. Its success helped propel Wagner's same-name debut album to No. 44 on the Billboard 200.
"The soft-rock radio standard struck a nerve with a large number of listeners because it expresses that common feeling so well," Grunge wrote. "All Wagner needs is some time to think and reflect, and this song likely became a contemplation tool for many others going through a similar situation."
Others to successfully make the crossover from screen to music include Wagner's GH buddy Rick Springfield, Dirty Dancing's Patrick Swayze, and Full House's John Stamos, with all the above achieving chart success. Some even winning a Grammy, ahem, Rick.
Although Wagner made some big waves with All I Need, his follow-up songs and albums did not. So, he continued his acting career, later appearing in the prime time soap Melrose Place and currently on the Hallmark Channel series When Calls the Heart. Not that it matters, though. "All I Need" is all we need.
