2004 Iconic Millennial Rock Anthem is Still Charting 22 Years Later

Originally released in 2003, "Mr. Brightside" by The Killers became even more popular when the band rereleased it 2004. The song continues to be a huge hit, and is currently number six on the Hot 100 Rock Songs on Billboard.

"Mr. Brightside" has become widely well-known and recognizable over the years, becoming somewhat of an anthem for the millennial generation. It is extremely popular specifically in the United Kingdom, where it is the third biggest selling/streaming song of all time and is the longest-charting single on the UK Official Singles Chart Top 100. "Mr. Brightside" is one of the top fifteen most downloaded rock tracks ever in the country.

The music for the song was written by guitarist Dave Keuning, and Flowers wrote the lyrics upon hearing his composition. "Mr. Brightside" depicts the true story of frontman Brandon Flowers finding his girlfriendcheating on him in a bar in Las Vegas. Of the lyrics Flowers said, "I was asleep and I knew something was wrong. I have these instincts. I went to the Crown and Anchor, a bar in Vegas, and my girlfriend was there with another guy."

Despite its release in 2004, the song was more of a "sleeper hit" and did not chart until 2005. That year, it was one of the top 10 most downloaded song on iTunes selling 889,323 digital copies in America. Over 20 years later, "Mr. Brightside" still has the highest popularity rating possible that iTunes offers.

In 2021, "Mr. Brightside" became the first song to spend over five years on a UK singles chart. As of 2026, the number of weeks it has spent on the charts has surpassed over 500.

The immense popularity of the song has made some call it overhyped and overplayed. The Guardianwrote, "[You hear it] on the radio. In the supermarket. In the pub. The office. In a cab. Thrumming through your neighbours' wall... Blasted out at every party or wedding you'll attend for the rest of your life." However despite this, critics consider it to be the number one song in The Killers entire catalog.
