Spice Girls Made History on the Charts With This Album 29 Years Ago Today

The late '90s were defined by certain pop-culture staples, with the Spice Girls arguably amongst the spread.

For certain generations, just hearing the British girl group's iconic name can transport you back to your childhood and/or adolescence. And their pop music is still cherished to this day.

On that note, Sunday, March 24 marked exactly 29 years since the Spice Girls went to No. 1 on the U.S. album chart with Spice, making them only the third all-girl group to do so after The Supremes and The Go-Go's - and the first-ever U.K. girl group to do so.

As a quick refresher, here are the singles from the Spice Girl's certified Multi-Platinum debut LP:

  • "Wannabe"
  • "Say You'll Be There"
  • "2 Become 1"
  • "Mama" / "Who Do You Think You Are"

Just recently, Mel C revealed that the Spice Girls are still "trying" to find a way to celebrate the band's 30th anniversary this year. Fans had hoped that the group would reunite this year to celebrate three decades since the release of their debut single ‘Wannabe', but it looks like they may be waiting longer.

"We are trying to find something we all agree is fitting of the legacy we have created, but that also everyone is comfortable with," Mel, 52, told The Telegraph newspaper recently. There were rumors of a tour to celebrate three decades together, but it has since been shot down.

Also this month, a nostalgic photo was uploaded to the Spice Girls' official Instagram account that had fans buzzing. "Back when it was all just beginning 📸 Taken 30 years ago today," the caption of the May 16 post reads.

It's clear the beloved girl group still has a loyal fanbase, given that Instagram users have since flooded the post's comments section with their support for the Spice Girls. "My childhood in one picture 🥹💙🧡," wrote one fan, while another user commented, "Thank you for giving us so much joy❤️."
