Spooky Tales Is Bringing Retro Horror Anthology Stories Back With PS1 Style Terror
Retro horror anthologies have become increasingly popular in indie gaming, but Spooky Tales is trying to distinguish itself by combining multiple horror subgenres inside a single connected experience. Developed by Liminal Road and published by Nuntius Games alongside Vsoo Games, the upcoming PC title presents four standalone horror stories hosted by a macabre undead narrator with a twisted sense of humor.
The structure of Spooky Tales is one of its most interesting elements. Rather than focusing on a single setting or protagonist, the game acts as a horror anthology where each story explores a different style of fear. The developers specifically cite influences such as 1920s pulp cosmic horror, Junji Ito-inspired body horror, slasher films, mascot horror, and VHS-era B-movie aesthetics. That broad approach could give the game a stronger sense of variety than many indie horror titles that rely on a single gimmick or atmosphere throughout the entire experience.
One of the featured stories shown so far is The Abyss-Borne, which follows a fisherman arriving at an isolated coastal village where something ancient lurks beneath the ocean. The setup leans heavily into cosmic horror, particularly the fear of unknowable entities hidden beneath dark waters. Players eventually leave shore in a small fishing boat and venture into the open sea with only a harpoon for protection. The official description repeatedly hints that something beneath the waves may be observing the player, reinforcing the oppressive atmosphere shown in the trailer.
Retro Horror Anthologies Continue To Grow In Popularity
Part of what makes Spooky Tales notable is how strongly it embraces horror nostalgia without limiting itself to one era. The game pulls visual inspiration from PS1 survival horror, thematic inspiration from pulp horror literature and manga, and tonal influence from 1980s direct-to-video horror films. That mixture gives it a broader identity than many retro horror projects currently appearing on Steam.
For horror fans who enjoy retro aesthetics, anthology storytelling, and varied subgenres, Spooky Tales already looks like one of the more interesting indie horror projects currently in development. Its combination of cosmic dread, body horror, slashers, and surreal retro presentation gives it a distinct identity in a genre that continues to grow increasingly crowded.
