1982 Soft Rock Smash Hit No. 1 After ‘General Hospital' Made It a Love Theme for Its Troubled Hero
The line between soap opera fantasy and pop music blurred in 1982 when one emotional soft rock ballad became inseparable from a fan-favorite General Hospital romance.
The Patti Austin and James Ingram collaboration "Baby Come to Me" was released in the Spring of 1982. However, it didn't reach the pinnacle of chart success until 10 months later, when it was used to soundtrack a new love affair for the soap opera's troubled hero.
General Hospital started using it for romantic scenes featuring Luke Spencer (Tony Geary) and his new love interest, Holly Sutton (Emma Samms). This was a big risk for the daytime drama, as Luke and his longtime love, Laura Spencer (Genie Francis), had tied the knot in the most beloved wedding in soap opera history just one year prior.
However, the Rod Temperton-written tune exploded in popularity after it played during an emotional scene where Luke retreated to the woods to cope with the grief of believing Laura had died. Billboard reported that after the song aired, viewers flooded ABC with phone calls and letters asking about the emotional ballad. In the days before quick internet access to information, this was how viewers let the series know their likes and dislikes.

Billboard wrote, "Jill Phelps, who was the music director for the soap, had a daughter who attended the same school as the daughter of Howard Rosen, who did PR at Warner Brothers. This connection alerted Rosen to the unexpected opportunity, and in October 1982, he arranged for the re-release of 'Baby, Come to Me.' Eighteen weeks later, the song bumped 'Africa' by Toto out of the No. 1 spot to top the Hot 100 on the chart dated for the week of February 19, 1983."
The song was initially released on Austin's 1981 LP Every Home Should Have One. "Baby, Come To Me" was its third single. Michael McDonald provided backing vocals.
"Baby Come to Me" wasn't the first time a song catapulted to the top of the charts after being used on the then No. 1 soap opera. General Hospital spawned some other huge hits during its run as a top daytime serial.
In 1979, Herb Alpert's "Rise" hit the top of the charts after the show used it during one of the most controversial moments between Luke and Laura. Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl" also peaked after he joined the cast as Dr. Noah Drake. Christopher Cross's "Think of Laura" landed at No. 9 during scenes where Luke remembered his late love, Laura.
One year later, Patti Austin and James Ingram recorded a second hit, "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?" which reached No. 5 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart in 1983. That song was nominated for an Academy Award for its inclusion in the film Best Friends.
