1972 Rock Classic, With Iconic Guitar Riff and Legendary Songwriter, Became a No. 1 Hit
In 1972, T. Rex released a glam rock classic that helped solidify the band's place at the forefront of British music.
"Metal Guru" became a No. 1 hit in the United Kingdom and further established frontman Marc Bolan as one of the era's most influential songwriters.
Built around a simple but unforgettable guitar riff, soaring vocal harmonies and Bolan's distinctive songwriting style, the song captured the energy of the glam rock movement at its commercial peak.
By 1972, T. Rex had already become one of Britain's biggest bands, thanks to hits such as "Get It On," "Hot Love" and "Telegram Sam." "Metal Guru" continued that remarkable streak, becoming another chart-topper and helping fuel what fans often refer to as "T. Rextasy," or the intense popularity that surrounded the band in the early 1970s.
The song's meaning has been debated for decades. Bolan himself suggested it was written as a love song, describing the "Metal Guru" as a kind of spiritual figure representing love and positive energy rather than a literal person.
"I relate 'Metal Guru' to all gods around," Bolan said in a 1972 interview. "I believe in a god, but I have no religion. With 'Metal Guru', it's like someone special, it must be a godhead. I thought how God would be, he'd be all alone without a telephone."
Like much of Bolan's work, the lyrics mixed fantasy, mystery and emotion in ways that encouraged listeners to create their own interpretations.
"My lyrics always come before the music," Bolan recalled. "Repetition comes into my songs a lot because I think my lyrics are so obscure that they need to be hammered home. You need to hear them eight or nine times before they start to make sense."
The song later appeared on T. Rex's album The Slider, which became one of the defining glam rock records of the decade.
Bolan's influence extended far beyond the charts. His combination of catchy hooks, electric guitars and flamboyant style helped shape the future of rock music, influencing everyone from punk bands to alternative rock artists decades later.
Although his life was tragically cut short when he died in a car accident in 1977 at the age of 29, his songwriting legacy has continued to grow.
More than 50 years after topping the U.K. charts, "Metal Guru" remains one of T. Rex's signature recordings, a glittering glam rock anthem built around an iconic riff and the imagination of one of Britain's greatest rock songwriters.
