Murder Meet Cute Mixes Retro Computers, Goth Vibes, and Murder Mysteries

There's something deeply unsettling about old computers, and Murder Meet Cute seems more than happy to lean into that feeling.

Following its recent reveal during InterfaceX26, the upcoming interactive fiction horror game is preparing to show off more of its strange little world with a brand-new trailer debuting on June 1 during the Horror Game Awards showcase. The event, now in its fourth year, promises a packed lineup of horror and mystery reveals, but Murder Meet Cute is shaping up to be one of the more unusual entries.

The new trailer will focus more heavily on protagonist Amy, a sharp-tongued goth computer technician trying to survive a growing mystery in her small town while something far more sinister seems intent on causing her harm. Based on the teaser details, players can expect a closer look at both the story and the unsettling force stalking her.

Set against the backdrop of retro 1990s operating systems, Murder Meet Cute turns old PCs into tools for investigation. Players will repair customer computers, dig through emails, forums, and ICQ-style chats, and slowly piece together both personal secrets and a string of suspicious deaths unfolding around town.

One of the game's stranger mechanics involves "Crypto-Nonographic" puzzles, essentially creepy twists on picross and nonograms that transform into grotesque digital viruses once solved. It's an odd mix of cozy nostalgia and psychological horror that somehow feels weirdly fitting.

Beyond the mystery itself, the game also seems eager to celebrate 90s culture, from retro interface design to FMV-inspired visuals and industrial-inspired music. It also doesn't hurt that Amy sounds like the type of protagonist who has very little patience for difficult customers.

The new Murder Meet Cute trailer premieres June 1 during the Horror Game Awards showcase at 7 pm BST.
