Google Doodle celebrates disco music and its LGBTQ pioneers

June 1 (UPI) --Google released a special Google Doodle Monday to kick off Pride Month.

The Doodle features a retro-inspired font and a dynamic image of a rotating, sparkling disco ball.

The artwork, created by artist Ohni Lisle, is meant to celebrate "the art of disco" and the LGBTQ artists who helped found the genre.

Google described disco as "the genre that transformed the dance floor into a space for self-expression, individuality, and community."

Disco music in the United States emerged in black, brown and LGBTQ communities in the 1960s and 1970s. Popular artists included Donna Summer, the Bee Gees, Gloria Gaynor, and KC and the Sunshine Band.
