A retired FBI agent recently weighed in on Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie‘s mother, Nancy Guthrie, four months after her abduction in Tucson, Ariz.

As the investigation hits the four-month milestone on Monday, June 1, Parade spoke with Jason Pack, a former FBI special agent, about the 84-year-old, who remains missing.

"Four months in, cases like this don't go cold, they go quiet," he pointed out. "That's a very different thing. Investigators are still working, still following threads, and frankly still waiting on someone to make a mistake or a decision to come clean."

Pack also offered insight into what investigators are likely focusing on behind the scenes.

"At four months, investigators are doing two things simultaneously. They're going back to the beginning with fresh eyes, reexamining every piece of evidence, every interview, every tip that may have looked insignificant in the first weeks," he explained. "And they're watching. Watching finances. Watching communications. Watching behavior. Because four months is a long time to keep a secret, and people start to crack. They make calls they shouldn't make. They spend money they can't explain. They act nervous when there's no reason to be nervous. "

Additionally, Pack speculated that those with information likely aren't sleeping well right now. "The $1 million reward is still on the table, and that kind of pressure doesn't expire. It compounds," he said. "Somebody knows something, and the weight of that is getting heavier every single day."

When asked if he thought there was still hope of finding out what happened to Nancy, Pack replied, " Hope absolutely remains. I've worked cases that looked like dead ends right up until the moment they weren't."

Pack also offered insight into what Nancy's family was experiencing at this stage in the investigation.

"What people should remember is that behind every update and every theory is a family living through something most of us can't begin to imagine," he shared. "Savannah Guthrie and her family get up every single morning not knowing where her mother is. That kind of grief doesn't take a day off. It doesn't get any easier at four months. In many ways, it gets harder."

Pack added, "My heart goes out to her and to every family sitting in that same impossible place right now."

Nancy was last seen at her Tucson home on the evening of Jan. 31. As of writing, no suspect has been named despite Savannah's $1 million reward offer, video footage and stills of a masked suspect on Nancy's porch, and ongoing processing of DNA evidence.
