Kurt Russell Reveals Why He and Goldie Hawn Left Hollywood

Kurt Russell wasn't trying to "escape" Hollywood when he and longtime partner Goldie Hawn left their lives in Los Angeles behind and moved to Colorado 40 years ago.

The Once Upon a Time in Hollywood star, 75, insisted that he doesn't "dislike" L.A., but decided to pursue a "more comfortable" lifestyle with his and the First Wives Club actress' blended family in an interview with PEOPLE published on Sunday, May 31.

After Russell and Hawn, 80, "got together" in 1983, the Escape From L.A. actor explained that they decided to build a ranch in Colorado for their kids, including son Wyatt Russell, 39, Hawn's two children from her marriage to Bill Hudson-Oliver Hudson, 49, and Kate Hudson, 46-and Russell's son from his marriage to Season Hubley, 46-year-old Boston Russell.

"I don't dislike L.A.," Russell explained. "It's just not my preference in terms of how I like to live my life." He added, "I wasn't escaping. I was just living where I live."

As an actor, Russell said he was "fortunate" that the move away from Hollywood "didn't make any difference" in his career, which went on to include hit films like The Thing and The Hateful Eight. "But when I did it, nobody else was doing that," he continued of the move. "I had many people tell me, ‘Well, that's goodbye. That's it.' I said, ‘Well, we'll see.'"

Russell would go on to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2017 and most recently starred in Taylor Sheridan's new Paramount+ series, The Madison.

When it comes to raising his kids in Colorado, Russell noted that they had a "very different" childhood than they would have had in the city. "They grew up with a good dose of what nature can offer," the Emmy-nominated actor shared. "There are difficulties to it, but there are also great rewards to it. I'm just more comfortable there."
