‘Supergirl' Turns Head with Glowing First Reviews – Here's What the Critics Are Saying
The reviews are officially in for DC's latest and greatest superhero film, Supergirl. And if early critics' responses are any indication, fans are in for a certified wild ride of a movie.
According to Variety, an early media screening for Supergirl has been met with largely positive reactions from critics, with many complimenting the film for star Milly Alcock's lead performance.
While many felt the movie didn't exactly set itself apart as the most revolutionary superhero movie of all time, they nevertheless deemed it a worthy successor to the DCU's earlier Superman movie, favorably comparing it to the Mad Max franchise.
"It isn't a classic but it's fun and hits most of the targets it aims for," shared journalist Simon Thompson. "Milly Alcock is great as the titular heroine and Momoa's Lobo is a blast. Other big wins are the action, humor and when it leans into physical production."
"It doesn't quite have the resonance of Superman, but it acts as both a perfect companion and follow-up to that movie with better characters and more complex relationships," added Germain Lussier, a critic for Gizmodo and io9. "It's also incredibly emotional, which makes the action hit even harder."
The second official installment in director James Gunn's newly rebooted DC Universe, Supergirl stars Alcock as the unruly titular character embarking on an intergalactic adventure beyond viewers' wildest imagination.
The movie's logline specifically reads: "When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice."
Starring Alcock, Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham and Jason Momoa, the film is slated for release on June 26. The film will be followed by the horror superhero movie Clayface later this fall, as well as a sequel to Superman, titled Man of Tomorrow, for July 9, 2027.
