Following Reboot News, Cult Classic Sci-Fi TV Show Gets Another Exciting Adaptation

In the wake of the thrilling news of an all-new animated series based upon the cult-classic space western series Firefly comes another new addition to the 'verse, as Dynamite Entertainment has just announced it is launching a new comic book series coming this fall.

Penned by Mark Russell (known for his work on Superman: Space Age and Batman: Dark Age) and illustrated by Lorenzo Re (The Terminator), the new peek into the beloved, short-lived universe follows Captain Mal Reynolds as he struggles to come up with the funds to keep his ship, Serenity, flying. Meanwhile, Simon and Kaylee find themselves pretending to be married to pull off their latest greatest heist before "an old caper comes back to haunt them."

There's no mention of other characters, including pilot Hoban "Wash" Washburne and Shepherd Derrial Book, who died in the wrap-up film Serenity, so it's unclear at this point if this new entry into the series' lore serves as a sequel or a prequel.

Firefly first premiered on Fox in 2002, but the episodes were aired out of order, making things a little confusing, and it was canceled before the complete season had even aired. The follow-up film, Serenity, was a box office bomb in 2005, but over the years, the series has built a massive fanbase and enjoyed follow-ups in the form of comics from Dark Horse and Boom Studios, which further built upon the universe's history-taking place over two hundred years since the Earth became uninhabitable-and exploring several decades into the future.

After much teasing from the series' entire main cast, earlier this year they revealed that star Nathan Fillion's production company Collision33 had partnered up with 20th Television Animation to develop an animated version of Firefly, with Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher,Summer Glau, and Adam Baldwin all expected to reprise their roles. Ron Glass, who played Book, died nearly a decade ago at the age of 71.

The series' pilot episode is reportedly called Episode #1: 201, implying it serves as a direct second season, so how Tudyk's character Wash is involved is sure to pique longtime fans' interest.

Unfortunately, there isn't yet a studio or streamer backing the project, so when-or even if-the final product comes to fruition remains to be seen.

As for the new comic series, the first edition, available for preorder now, launches in September, and comes with a selection of several different collectible cover art options.
