First responders celebration: Lacey Lions Clubs will honor police and fire workers with a celebration beginning at 10 a.m. at the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office station in Tumwater, 7721 New Market St. SW; at 11 a.m. at the Lacey Police Department, 420 College St. SE; and at noon at Lacey Fire District 3, 1231 Franz St. SE. There will be cakes, chili and proclamations from Gov. Jay Inslee.
Saturday
Olympia Garden Club plant sale: A variety of perennials, shrubs and succulents will be on sale from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Johnson’s Nursery, 7032 Spurgeon Creek Road SE, Olympia. Proceeds support student scholarships and horticultural grants for Thurston County teachers.
Feast at the Reach fundraiser: The Nisqually Reach Nature Center is putting on an outdoor dinner that features Nisqually salmon, gourmet food, beverages, a raffle and silent auction from 4-6 p.m. Sept. 12 at 4949 D’Milluhr Drive NE, at Luhr Beach. Author Susan Abulhawa at Orca: Orca Books and the Rachel Corrie Foundation welcome Susan Abulhawa to the bookstore Saturday afternoon. The author of “Mornings in Jenin,” Abulhawa will talk about her new book, “The Blue Between Sky and Water,” a novel about four generations of powerful Palestinian women in Gaza. The event begins at 1 p.m. at Orca Books, 509 Fourth Ave. E., Olympia. Information: 360-352-0123.

Free violin and piano concert: The public is invited to attend a free concert and birthday celebration for Helen De Pastel, who turned 90 on Sept. 8. De Pastel of Olympia is a longtime violinist and violin instructor. She has taught violin for more than 65 years at Grays Harbor College in Aberdeen, the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma and privately to many students. The concert, which will be performed by former students and Robert Jorgensen, is a seven-movement sonata for violin and piano composed by Karen De Pastel, her daughter. The concert/birthday celebration is at 2 p.m. at The United Churches of Olympia, 11th Avenue and Capitol Way. In lieu of flowers, gifts or cover charges, donations will be accepted to defray the cost of the concert.
