Free violin and piano concert: The public is invited to attend a free concert and birthday celebration for Helen De Pastel, who turned 90 on Sept. 8. De Pastel is a longtime violinist and violin instructor who has taught for more than 65 years at Grays Harbor College in Aberdeen, the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma and privately to many students. The concert, which will be performed by former students and Robert Jorgensen, is a seven-movement sonata for violin and piano composed by Karen De Pastel, her daughter. The concert/birthday celebration is at 2 p.m. at The United Churches of Olympia, 11th Avenue and Capitol Way. In lieu of flowers, gifts or cover charges, donations will be accepted to defray the cost of the concert.

League of Women Voters: The Thurston County League of Women Voters will host a free public forum on the TransPacific Partnership at 6:30 p.m. at the Olympia Center, 222 Columbia St. NW.

Olympia Film Society open house and membership meeting: Join OFS from noon-2:30 p.m. Sept. 19 to learn about where OFS is headed and celebrate its progress. On the agenda: tours of the Capitol Theater, ideas for renovations, repairs and upgrades of the theater, introduction of new board members and free popcorn. Discover Lake Sylvia Fall Festival: The Friends of Schafer and Lake Sylvia will host the sixth annual Discover Lake Sylvia Fall Festival in Montesano, 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 19 at Lake Sylvia State Park, 1812 N. Lake Sylvia Road, Montesano. The family-oriented event kicks off with a camp pancake breakfast; 10K, half marathon and 2-mile family fun runs; music; kid’s games and races; an artist’s market; food vendors; Boy Scout cooking demos and more. Auditions for Entertainment Explosion: Entertainment Explosion (EE) is hosting new member auditions for singers and dancers, ages 50 and up, from 10 a.m. to noon, at St. Andrews Methodist Church, 530 School St. in Lacey.
