Bluegrass at Prosperity Grange
It’s two days of bluegrass at the Steamboat Stringband Jamboree at Prosperity Grange, 3701 Steamboat Island Road, Olympia. Hosted by The Oly Mountain Boys, The Pine Hearts and Outdoor Arts and Recreation, the jamboree will feature 18 local bands showcasing Northwest bluegrass and Americana music. Gates open at 3:45 p.m. Friday (May 6) with music through midnight and at 11:30 a.m. Saturday with music through midnight. Winter in May at Little Theater
A story filled with sibling rivalry, adultery and dungeons, the comedic “The Lion in Winter” production opens Friday (May 6) at Olympia Little Theater, 1925 Miller Ave. NE, Olympia. The play centers around the royal family during Christmas 1183, exposing the inner conflicts. Showtimes are 7:55 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays through May 21 and 1:55 p.m. May 15 and 22. Go out to a trance
Come out for a special screening of “Reak: Trance Music and Possession in West Java” at Capitol Theater, 206 Fifth Ave. SE, Olympia. The documentary explores the tradition of trance possession ceremony in Cibodas, West Java, Indonesia and features Olympia’s own Arrington de Dionyso. Everything oyster
Learn all about oysters, oyster farming and life on Hood Canal at the Annual Hama Hama Oyster Rama from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. The day will feature tours with intertidal ecologists, u-pick oysters and clams, Shuckathalon, food, music and fun. Head out to Hama Hama Oyster Saloon, 35846 N. U.S. Highway 101, Lilliwaup. Celebrate Free Comic Book Day Saturday with activities throughout the South Sound including free comics, children’s crafts, games and even cosplay. Messages in rap
Get an in-depth look into the history of music ballads to rap when Eric Davis facilitates “Rap 101: The Message behind the Music” in a community discussion. Davis, aka “Professor E,” is a sociology professor at Bellevue College and will touch on the topics of ideology, mainstream news media and status quo in regards to rap music. Girlfriends go out
Grab some of your best girlfriends Thursday and join in Girls Night Out at The Washington Center for Performing Arts, 512 Washington St. SE, Olympia. It’s a full day of exploring and supporting downtown Olympia merchants while getting great discounts and prizes. Purchase a goodie bag ticket for $12 before Wednesday, or $15 Thursday, find participating businesses and earn raffle tickets while you shop.
