Science for everyone
Take in interesting and mind-expanding displays and hands-on activities at the annual Evergreen Science Carnival and Research Exposition. There will be activities, performers, information and plain cool science from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday (May 27). It’s being held at the college, 2700 Evergreen Parkway NW, Olympia. Birds that sing
Experience the folk-grass group Stray Birds, performing traditional American folk music at Traditions Café and World Folk Art, 300 Fifth Ave. SW, Olympia. Martial arts action at Capitol Theater
Get ready for some pure old-school martial arts at this one-time screening of the Shaw Brothers’ “The 36th Chamber of Shaolin” at the Capitol Theater, 206 Fifth Ave. SE. The film was first released in North America as “Master Killer” and is considered a masterpiece of director and choreographer Lau Kar-leung. You don’t have to be a hardcore martial arts fan to enjoy the action film. It is playing at 9 p.m. Friday (May 27). Leave your politics at home
Lauren O’Neill brings to the stage a night of comedy, music and fun in her “Red, White and You” show at the Eagles Lodge, 805 Fourth Ave. E., Olympia. She will be joined by her band, The Ultra Sounds. Join the fun of not talking about politics at her 8 p.m. show Saturday. Tickets for the 21-and-older show are $7 for members and guests of the Eagles Lodge.

McDougall to stage
album release party
In support of its upcoming album release for “Reaching for Some Light,” McDougall will be performing at a release party at Rhythm & Rye, 311 Capitol Way N. Olympia. The Oregon-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist breaks out of his self-imposed rules to create an album representative of his life struggles. Come join the party at 9 p.m. Saturday. coming to New Moon
Join artist and writer Taylor Dow when he shares his newest comic, “Apocalypse Dad,” at a signing and discourse on his work at The New Moon Café, 113 Fourth Ave. W., Olympia. You will be able to see the full collection of original pages, enjoy refreshments, participate in “comix discourse” and get a book from 4-8 p.m. Saturday. Celebrate the words of Elizabethan England
Delve into the world of words at Theater Artists Olympia’s presentation “Words Words Words: The Elizabethan Poets” at The Midnight Sun, 113 N. Columbia Ave., Olympia. The celebration of sonorous verse by the likes of Sir Edmund Spenser, Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare represents the emotions and passions stirred by the words of the Renaissance poets.
