Who wants pie? Well, everyone
Whether you’re competing or just want to support local bakers, check out the Pie in the Library contest this weekend at the Lacey Timberland Regional Library, 500 College St. SE. Sponsored by the library, Olympia Food Co-op and Friends of the Lacey Library, the contest celebrates bakers young and old, and all types of pies. Come out to cheer and sample some pie. It is 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and free to the public. Information: 360-491-3860.

Across the musical spectrum
Tapping into musical memories of three generations, Dean Ratzman performs music from the 1940s through Big Band, jazz, blues, rock and soul to Sinatra and Santana. He will be playing in concerts at three library locations — 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Olympia Timberland Regional Library, 313 Eighth Ave. SE; 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Vernetta Smith Chehalis Timberland Regional Library, 400 N. Market Blvd.; 2 p.m. Aug. 27 at Aberdeen Timberland Regional Library, 121 E. Market St. The concerts are free.

A visit to the dark side
With the sentiment that Halloween is just too far away, the Words, Words, Words troupe is presenting Contemporary Horror: The Darkest Minds of the 20th Century. Bringing twisted tales from the minds of Clive Barker, Harlan Ellision and more, there will be two shows — 7:30 p.m. Friday (Aug. 19) and Saturday — at The Midnight Sun Performance Center, 113 N. 56th Army Band to finish series
Wrapping up its Music in the Park summer concert series, the Olympia Downtown Association’s final concert will feature the 56th Army Band playing jazz. Gather up your lawn chairs and blanket and head out to Sylvester Park, 615 Washington St. SE, Olympia, for the 7 p.m. performance.

Old-fashioned fun in Chehalis
The Southwest Washington Fair is in full swing with animal exhibits, vendors, live music, concerts, fair rides and more. Come out for good old-fashioned country fair fun at Southwest Washington Fair Grounds, 2555 N. National Ave., Chehalis. Hours are 10 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday (Aug. 19) and Saturday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday. ‘Zootopia’ on the outdoor screen
Bring out the family for a fun night at the Tumwater Screen on the Green outdoor movie series. This week will feature the film “Zootopia,” sponsored by Northstar Church. Arrive early for the free community event, bring your own picnic, lawn chairs and blanket to the Tumwater Valley Golf Course, 4611 Tumwater Valley Drive SE. ‘Blue Velvet’ marks 30th anniversary
Three decades after its initial release, “Blue Velvet” still packs power, fear and mystery. Celebrating it 30th anniversary, the film by director David Lynch and staring Kyle Maclachlan, Isabella Rossellini and Dennis Hopper will be shown at the Capitol Theater, 206 Fifth Ave. SE, Olympia. Showtimes are 6:30 p.m. Saturday and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $9, $6 Olympia Film Society members (olympiafilmsociety.org.)

A night of three-part harmony
The New York City-based trio Tickled Pink is known for three-part harmony in the style of the Andrews Sisters. One of the singers, Stephanie Layton, was born and raised in Olympia.
