Weekend is full of dancing and outdoor adventure -- and you can watch it from theater seating

Dance to many different drummers

The 2025 Olympia Dance Festival features performances by 16 Western Washington dance troupes and guest appearances by two dancers who spent years with top modern companies. Freelance dancers Eran Bugge, an alumna of the Paul Taylor Dance Co., and Aaron Loux, formerly a celebrated member of Mark Morris Dance Group, will be featured at the festival, set for Saturday, March 1. Bugge, who danced with Taylor for 19 years, and Loux, who danced with Morris for 12 years, will each perform a solo and join for a duet. Presented by the Washington Center for the Performing Arts and Ballet Northwest, the festival will feature styles ranging from ballet, contemporary, hip-hop, tap and jazz to belly dance, ballroom, Irish and Chinese dance. The festival begins at 7 p.m. at the center, 512 Washington St. SE, Olympia. Tickets are $24-$36.

Head into the mountains

The weekend promises adventure, action and plenty of snow — on screen, that is. The Olympia Mountaineers are once again bringing the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour to town for three full nights of film screenings featuring high-altitude sports, stunning scenery and inspirational stories. Selections screening Friday, Feb. 28, include “Ice Waterfalls,” in which an intrepid kayaker runs the rivers and waterfalls formed by melting glaciers, and “2 Legs Is 2 Easy,” about skier, climber and biker Steve Karczewski, who has devoted his life to outdoor adventure even though he was born with bone cancer and had his left leg amputated when he was 1 year old. Screenings are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 6 p.m. Sunday at the Capitol Theater, 206 Fifth Ave. SE, Olympia. Tickets are $18 per screening, $30 for two nights and $38 for all three.

Musical circus

Denmark-based trio Dreamers’ Circus, which blends Nordic folk with classical music, made a splash in 2019 when local chamber series Emerald City Music hosted the group’s West Coast debut. On Saturday, March 1, the Circus is back in Olympia, where the group will play a surprise program. The trio has won five Danish Music Awards and was named 2023 Artist of the Year by the Danish national classical radio channel P2. “The Return of Dreamers’ Circus” begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Minnaert Center for the Arts, 2011 Mottman Road SW, Olympia. Tickets are $39-$49 for adults, $10 for students.

Freelance writer Molly Gilmore talks with DJ Kevin the Brit about what’s happening around town on KGY-FM’s “Oly in a Can,” airing at 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Fridays.
