Weekend getaway: Triton Cove State Park

What: Triton Cove State Park is a small day-use park on Hood Canal.

The 29-acre park with 555 feet of shoreline has three unsheltered picnic tables. There is 100 feet of dock. Triton Cove is also a popular destination for diving, fishing, bird-watching and crabbing.

Where: On the Olympic Peninsula six miles south of Brinnon and seven miles north of Eldon

When: The campground is open 6 a.m.-8 p.m. in the summer.

Getting there: From Interstate 5, travel south to Exit 104 onto U.S. 101. Follow U.S. 101 about 54 miles north to the park.

Cost: There is no longer a charge to park at state parks. There is a $5 fee for using the boat launch.

History: This location was a gas station and small store before World War II. It was developed into a trailer park fishing resort after the war, then purchased by the state in 1990. The state rebuilt the boat launch.

Of note: A vault toilet is on the premises. There have long been plans to add campsites to this park, but camping is not currently allowed. The boat launches are ADA-compliant. The boating float is removed Nov. 5 each year and re-installed March 6.
