14-year-old went missing after school in Yelm Monday

Note: Nelson’s family posted on Facebook late Monday night that Kailey has been found and is home.

A 14-year-old girl has been missing since Monday after school in Yelm, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.

Kailey Nelson attended all of her high school classes Monday, Lt. Ray Brady told the Olympian, and texted her mother that her cell phone was dying — it appears she did not get on the bus to go home, Brady said. The office got a call from the girl’s mother around 4 p.m.

Kailey is white and 5 feet, 5 inches tall. The Sheriff’s Office did not have information on what she was wearing when she was last seen.

A police report from the incident reads that Nelson’s mother told a deputy “this isn’t the first time” Nelson has “done something like this,” Brady said, but this is the first time she’s reported it.

While the case is technically a missing person case, it’s currently considered a runaway by the Sheriff’s Office because Nelson did not go missing under suspicious circumstances. The office does not actively search for runaways before 30 days have passed, Brady said.

Brady advised anyone with information to call county dispatch at 360-704-2740. Crime Stoppers of South Sound wrote on Facebook that anyone with knowledge of Kailey’s whereabouts can call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 or submit a tip online at www.p3tips.com/1049.
