Netflix Adding 'Little Miss Sunshine' to Platform in June 2026
If you've been dying to revisit this dark comedy (which is fast approaching its 20th anniversary), Netflix has you covered. The platform is adding the 2006 award-winning tragicomedy Little Miss Sunshine to its June 2026 lineup.
Starring Hollywood heavy hitters Greg Kinnear, Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Paul Dano, Abigail Breslin (in her breakout role), and the late Alan Arkin, Little Miss Sunshine follows one family (played by the above actors) as they drive cross-country to get their daughter, Olive (Breslin), into the finals of a beauty pageant. Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris made their directorial debut with a script from Michael Arndt.
After debuting at Sundance, Little Miss Sunshine hit US theaters on July 26, 2006. It did exceptionally well at the box office for its genre, raking in $101.1 million on an $8 million budget. The critically lauded movie was also an awards season darling. It snagged four Oscar nominations, including for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress for Breslin, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor, with Arndt and Arkin taking home trophies for the latter two categories.
The film sits pretty on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 91 percent on the Tomatometer and the same score on the Popcornmeter. Retrospectively, the movie has aged remarkably well. Publications like The New York Times have ranked it on various best-of lists. The aforementioned placed it at No. 42 on its 2025 list of "The 100 Best Movies of the 21st Century."
This beautifully poignant and humorous coming-of-age story tackles universal themes of self-acceptance, depression, purpose, and family. As one reviewer of UGO.com observed, the movie "teaches us to embrace that middle ground, acknowledging that life may just be a beauty pageant, where we're often going to be outdone by someone prettier, smarter, or just plain luckier, but if we get up on that stage and be ourselves, everything will turn out fine."
A stage adaptation of Little Miss Sunshine premiered at La Jolla Playhouse on Feb. 15, 2011, followed by an Off-Broadway debut in October 2013 and an opening Off West End in 2019.
If you're ready to laugh, cry, and potentially feel alive inside during these increasingly unprecedented times, catch Little Miss Sunshine when it arrives on Netflix on June 1, 2026.
