Ask Angi: How can I upgrade my outdoor space on a budget?
Now that summer is in full swing, your outdoor space may need some extra attention. Whether you have a pool, a huge backyard or a small patio, there are some easy and budget-friendly projects that can make a big difference.
Before you get started, take a walk outside and look at the state of your outdoor space with fresh eyes. Take note of anything that sticks out or anything you want to change. It’s always a good idea to start by cleaning. A good power wash can freshen up dingy sidewalks, patios, siding or decks. This is also a great time to clean any outdoor furniture like chairs, tables, birdbaths or appliances in your outdoor kitchen.
Lighting is one of the highest-impact, lowest-cost upgrades you can make. String lights, solar path lights and lanterns are all easy to install yourself and can completely transform the feel of your space. As a bonus, lighting can make your outdoor space more accessible and functional. If you want something more permanent, a pro can install landscape lighting for $2,000 to $6,000.
Painting is another affordable project. While the cost of hiring a pro to paint your home’s entire exterior can add up quickly (usually between $1,800 and $4,500), you can pick and choose certain aspects to paint to lower the costs. For example, you can hire a pro to paint your door for an average of just $190, or your shutters for an average of $350. Or, if you’re DIY inclined, you can paint your outdoor space yourself to save even more money. Just make sure you leave any high-up areas that require a ladder to a pro.
Landscaping always comes to mind when thinking of outdoor projects. Even just cutting your grass and adding mulch to your flower beds can go a long way. If you have some extra room in your budget, consider adding some new plants or path stepping stones to make your space look more put together.
Don’t forget the little things. Consider adding a new doormat, putting cushions on your patio furniture and hanging up umbrellas for shade.
No matter what your budget is, there’s an outdoor project you can tackle this summer. Even small, affordable projects like cleaning and adding lighting can make your space more comfortable and enjoyable to use.
