Netflix to Remove 1992 Cult Classic 'Single White Female' on August 1

There are still more than three weeks left in the month of July, but Netflix is getting a head start on the month of August. Already, we're seeing reports of some of the streaming service's plans for adding and removing content next month.

According to What's on Netflix, over 50 movie titles are leaving Netflix on August 1. Among them is a 1992 horror film that became a surprising box office success and a cult classic.

Netflix is dropping Single White Female

The psychological thriller, which stars Bridget Fonda as Allison Jones, a young woman whose new roommate Hedy (played by Jennifer Jason Leigh) begins to exhibit disturbing--and deadly--behavior, is leaving Netflix on Aug. 1.

Written by Don Roos and directed by Barbet Schroeder, Single White Female grossed over $84 million worldwide against a $16 million budget, with Leigh winning an MTV Movie Award for Best Villain.

The movie also earned solid reviews

Over time, Single White Femaleearned its place as a cult classic, and even upon release, it garnered some praise from critics.

"I have long adopted a generic approach to film criticism, evaluating movies as examples of what they aspire to be," wrote Roger Ebert, who gave the movie three stars out of four. "No genre is beyond redemption or beneath contempt, and here the slasher genre is given its due with strong performances and direction."

The Associated Press called Single White Female a "first-class thriller that will strike a terrifying note with anyone who's ever met the roommate from hell," while the Washington Post also voiced its approval. Entertainment Weekly, meanwhile, called the film "entertaining claptrap" with "some good, perverse touches."

A new sequel is reportedly in the works

Back in March, Deadline reported that 3000 Pictures had tapped Sarah DeLappe (Bodies Bodies Bodies) to write Single Female, a remake of Single White Female.

The sequel will reportedly star Jenna Ortega And Taylor Russell in the two main roles, with Stacey Sher And Marisa Paiva joining on as producers.
