A mom could barely believe the "chaos" that greeted her after leaving her 3-year-old alone for a matter of minutes with paint nearby.

Brittany Gil, a mom of five from Jacksonville, Arkansas, was busy giving her eldest son's room a "surprise refresh" when she made the kind of mistake that will be familiar to anyone with young children.

"I had set the roller with the extender in the playroom, already making a mistake," Gil told Newsweek. "I stepped into the bathroom to rinse the washcloths from cleaning the floor. I was finally done, and when I walked out, I found that chaos."

Having one child is stressful enough, but parenting multiple children usually brings greater practical and emotional demands.

A 2022 study published in Springer Nature identified factors such as time pressure, financial strain, childcare responsibilities, and reduced personal time as major contributors to parenting stress.

A widely cited survey of more than 7,000 U.S. mothers also found that mothers of three children reported the highest stress levels, so you can only imagine the challenges that come with raising five kids.

The good news is that Gil appears to be taking everything in stride.

Having worked hard to decorate the room, it would have been understandable for Gil to despair when she returned and saw what had happened.

In her absence, her son, Finley, had picked up the roller and proceeded to spread white paint throughout the home. "I walked back into the room to find him mid-art piece," she said.

She didn't get stressed, though.

"I just said, ‘Oh my gosh… oh my goshhhh,' then started laughing," Gil said. "I got him in the shower while, naturally, I videoed my family to share the chaos."

Gil said it took around 13 hours to clean up the mess, though her son happily jumped in to help and, according to his mom, "apologized more times than I could count."

She decided to share her story and the chaos of that day not as a lesson in staying vigilant around young children, but rather as a reminder of the importance of staying calm and seeing the lighter side of life.

Gil said: "Life is too short not to be able to laugh at yourself, and sometimes that includes your bad choices too."

There was another reason she was able to appreciate seeing her youngest son being mischievous.

"He was born with one kidney and is in kidney failure," Gil said.

"He sees multiple specialists, including some out of state. He has undergone two surgeries and multiple hospitalizations."

In that moment of chaos, Gil got a glimpse of her son doing what she has always wanted for him: being a kid.

"Honestly, seeing him do normal toddler things makes me so happy," she said.
