'Assassin's Creed Black Flag: Resynced' Is Officially the Best Game in the Series In More Than a Decade

Assassin's Creed Black Flag: Resynced is out this week, a remake of the beloved original game from 2013. It feels like Ubisoft has been chasing that success ever since, and now, with reviews in, it seems it is a good time to be an Assassin's Creed fan again.

According to Metacritic, Assassin's Creed Black Flag: Resynced is currently sitting at a metascore of 84, making it the best-reviewed game in the series since Assassin's Creed 3 in 2012. For context, Assassin's Creed 3 is sitting at a metascore of 84 as well.

On Metacritic's best Assassin's Creed games list, Resynced would be tied at number 4 with Assassin's Creed 3 and just under the original Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, which sits at number 3.

The latest game in the series before Resynced, Assassin's Creed Shadows, is sitting at an 81 metascore, tying with Assassin's Creed Origins from 2017.

Generally, reviews praise Resynced's graphics, sound, faithfulness to the original game, and additional content. Some criticism has been aimed at the game's abusable combat system and some of the new story elements. The removal of the original game's multiplayer and DLC expansions has also been met with some criticism.

Many reviews also highlight Resynced as a "return to form" for the series, after the franchise moved into being an RPG with Origins.

In Men's Journal's review of Resynced, I noted the game's graphics as gorgeous and appreciated the faithfulness to the original game and the game leaning into just being a grand pirate adventure.

The original Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag saw a lot of praise for its ship combat, immersion, graphics, and story. The stealth mechanics were generally criticized as being simplistic, which has also been brought up as a concern with Resynced.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag: Resynced release on July 9, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
