Adding a fountain to a backyard or patio usually comes with a premium price tag, but creative online projects frequently demonstrate how to bypass those retail markups. Instead of purchasing an expensive, pre-made setup from a nursery, social media creator @thehouseholdreview shared a cheap, easy way to DIY a fountain using Marshall's finds.

This specific project relies on basic flower pots and a straightforward pump assembly to create a functional garden accent without the heavy investment. The process requires very little assembly time and is a great weekend project for updating a patio or porch.

To get this tiered feature started, three rounded, textured clay pots of decreasing size are selected so they can nest together easily. Before stacking the planters, they have to be prepped for the plumbing elements. Using a power drill fitted with a strong masonry bit, holes are bored right in the middle of all the pots and sealed with silicone to create a watertight seal around the tubing. Notches are cut on the sides of each to support added metal spouts so they sit securely on the rim and don't slide around when the water starts flowing.

The pots are layered on top of each other, with flat rocks used to prop up the higher tiers and balance them. Clear vinyl tubing is routed up through the tiered center, and a black submersible pump sits directly in the large bottom basin pot, continuously cycling the water back up to the top. Plugging the system in instantly brings the feature to life, sending water bubbling out of the top tier and cascading down the metal spouts from level to level.

Maximizing Your Garden Oasis

When planning to build a version of this project, the entire look can be easily customized to complement the existing style of any backyard. While this version uses neutral, earthy clay pots for a modern rustic vibe, the display can also be transformed with glazed ceramic planters or faux-concrete urns.

To add a lush, living element, small aquatic plants can be added directly to the basins. Incorporating a quick coat of waterproof outdoor paint or placing the fountain among vibrant flower beds allows the entire setup to blend seamlessly into your existing garden landscape. And, for a pretty nighttime look, dropping a waterproof, submersible LED light into the middle tier will illuminate the moving water long after the sun goes down.
