American Airlines orders another 777

American Airlines disclosed Tuesday that it has ordered another Boeing 777-300ER to complement the two 777s it ordered in January.

At list price, the 777-300ER costs $284 million, though most customers get discounts. The aircraft, built in Boeing’s Everett plant, has a range of 9,100 miles. In a typical, 3-class configuration, the 777-300ER carries 365 passengers.

The 777 ordered Tuesday will be delivered in 2013, American said.

The 777 is rapidly replacing Boeing 747s and Airbus A340s on long international routes because of its fuel economy, estimated to be 9 percent better than that of the Airbus plane and 20 percent better than the larger 747-400.
