You can't go wrong with one of these Mercs
Mercedes-Benz may have lost the luxury sales crown to BMW in the United States, but it still has a passionate following. From the compact CLA to the towering GLS, Mercedes vehicles are high on image and back that up with the very latest technologies, forward-thinking design, and top-notch comfort. The best Mercedes you can buy in 2026 depends on your needs and budget, but with well over 20 individual models to choose from in the U.S., it's no easy decision. We've broken down the best Mercs into six distinct categories, based on our experience of them and their competitiveness with segment rivals. Any one of these cars will impress, so read on to find out why.

1. Best Mercedes Cruiser: S-Class
Mercedes produces epic sports cars (AMG GT), brawny off-roaders (G-Class), and futuristic EVs, but nothing quite epitomizes what the brand is all about like a luxurious cruiser. The S-Class still accomplishes this role better than any other Mercedes-and better than almost any other car in the world. From the base S500 to the rapid S63 E Performance, all models are superb long-distance cruisers. The interior of this sedan is almost unbelievably quiet and the air suspension nonchalantly shrugs off surface imperfections that would bother other cars. If you aren't doing the driving yourself, the sumptuous back seat has every conceivable amenity and stretch-out space.
Powerful six- and eight-cylinder engines add to the immense sense of occasion, something the S-Class has never lost through the decades. It's one of the top Mercedes cars you can buy new.

2. Best Mercedes for Enthusiasts: AMG GT 63 Coupe
First off, a proper AMG needs a V8, which immediately eliminates models like the C63, GLC 63, and SL 43 Roadster from the running as the best AMG for enthusiasts. Fortunately, the AMG GT 63 retains a snarling 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, which makes 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. As important as its incredible performance is the character the V8 endows this car with. It has the muscle-car vibe of a classic AMG from the 2000s, but unlike most of those, this one can also corner securely, thanks to the 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system. It's a rocket in a straight line, sounds glorious, looks stunning, and has a sporty yet posh interior-it's everything an AMG should be.
There's the even more powerful AMG GT 63 S E Performance with 805 hp, but it's a needlessly complicated plug-in hybrid that costs over $200,000 and weighs 485 lbs more than the normal GT 63. In a performance car, less weight is always the goal, which is why my choice as the top Mercedes-Benz for keen drivers is the non-hybrid GT 63.
3. Best Electrified Mercedes: AMG E53 Hybrid
Mercedes-AMG hasn't had a V8-powered E63 on sale for quite some time, but the arrival of the E53 Hybrid calls into question the need for it. This sedan delivers near-BMW M5 levels of performance at a lower price, but it's still as luxurious and comfortable as any other E-Class. The 3.0-liter turbocharged six-pot and electric motor combine for 577 hp, the same as the V8-powered GT 63. It needs just 3.9 seconds to hit 60 mph, which is astonishing for a car that can cruise for 43 miles on electric power alone.
In our test drive review, we were left blown away by the duality of the E53, which is a quiet luxury sedan when you need it to be and a sharp, blisteringly quick AMG when you ask more of it. Shockingly, this six-cylinder E-Class is 573 lbs lighter than the physically smaller, four-cylinder C63 S E Performance, which uses F1-derived powertrain technologies. The E53 is also a hybrid but keeps things simpler, relying more on old-school engine capacity and cylinder count than electrickery, and it's all the better for it.

4. Best Mercedes for Families: GLS-Class
The three-row GLS-Class isn't cheap-it starts at $90,250-but it's the most comfortable way to move a larger family around. We drove the GLS 580 last year, which has a 510-hp V8, and came away very impressed with the SUV's rapid acceleration, plush interior, and smooth ride. Even the six-cylinder GLS 450 is suitably rapid, with a 0-60 time of 5.8 seconds.
In six-seater guise, it's relatively simple to access the third row, which has acceptable legroom for adults of an average height. There are more standard and optional features than can be mentioned here, from rear-seat entertainment systems to high-end audio setups and a giant panoramic sunroof. If the price is within reach, it's the best family vehicle on the menu from Mercedes-Benz, and the upgraded 2027 model is expected to be even sweeter.
5. Best Mercedes For Off-Roading: G-Class
In this category, there is no easier choice than the G-Class. For decades, the boxy SUV has been associated with true off-roading prowess, and the 2026 model keeps that reputation alive. With ample ground clearance, three lockable differentials, and a permanent AWD system with a two-speed transfer case, the G-Class can go where most luxury SUVs can't. It does all of this by providing typical Mercedes luxury and craftsmanship in the cabin, too.
Even the base G550 is quick, with 443 hp and a 5.3-second 0-60 time. For anyone with $195,000 to spend, there's the AMG G63 with 577 hp and a 4.2-second benchmark sprint time. While many G-Class SUVs are bought for their iconic design and flashy image, this Mercedes is no poser.
6. Best Mercedes Under $50,000: C-Class (C300)
Access to the Mercedes-Benz club costs more than ever before, and there are now just a few models with a starting price of under $50,000. These include the GLA, GLB, GLC, CLA, and C-Class. In this group, the C-Class feels most like a proper Mercedes-Benz. From its downsized S-Class looks to the plush ride, there aren't any obvious signs that you're in one of the brand's cheaper new cars.
Only the C300 starts at under $50k ($49,650, to be exact), which gets you a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine producing 255 hp. That allows for a 0-60 mph sprint time of six seconds. Standard equipment includes heated front seats, a power sunroof, a 64-color LED ambient lighting system, and dual digital displays. Before you've ticked a single option box, it already feels like a well-sorted luxury sedan. It's the perfect entry point to the brand's lineup and one of the best Mercedes models at under $50,000.
