Tacoma among most livable cities for retirees

Tacoma’s parks, waterfront, access to health care and housing options have earned the City of Destiny a spot on Livability.com’s list of the 10 Best Places to Retire.

The online site considered a variety of measures in naming its top 10 including walkability, pollution, crime rates, affordability, climate and cultural amenities.

“Low health care costs, great hospitals, a high concentration of parks and golf courses, and lots of other retirees make Tacoma one of the best retirement destinations in the country,” the website said.

The ranking mentioned Sixth Avenue, Point Defiance Park, the Ruston Way waterfront and Mount Rainier National Park as assets making Tacoma a desirable place for retirees to live.

Among the other cities on the list were Scottsdale, Arizona; Carson City, Nevada; Rapid City, South Dakota; Charlottesville, Virginia; Lincoln, Nebraska; Hillsboro, Oregon; Plano, Texas; Sarasota, Florida, and Santa Barbara, California.

On Livability’s larger list of the 100 Top Places to Live, Tacoma ranks 42nd.
