Capital Development Company of Olympia has applied for a conditional use permit to bring new development to a longtime vacancy off Sleater-Kinney Road Southeast in Lacey.

The proposed project at 529 Sleater-Kinney Road is a 5,000-square-foot building for a coffee shop, restaurant and drive-thru, according to Sarah Schelling, an associate planner for the city of Lacey.

The site is a former Shell gasoline station and convenience store that closed a little over a year ago, she said. It sits between an existing Applebee’s restaurant and Bank of America branch.

Chris Blume of Capital Development Company could not be reached for comment.

The developer needs to secure a conditional use permit because that’s what the Woodland District requires for a developer who pitches a project with a drive-thru. The city’s Woodland District is between the Chehalis-Western Trail, Interstate 5, Pacific Avenue and College Street.

The conditional use permit process also means that the developer will have to go before the hearings examiner and Lacey City Council for final approval, Schelling said.

Capital Development is best known for developing the South Sound Shopping Center, currently home to Target and Kohl’s.

Those wishing to comment on the application have until 5 p.m. Nov. 16, Schelling said.

Comments can be sent in writing to Lacey Community Development Department, 420 College St. SE, Lacey, WA 98503, or call 360-491-5642.
